'Confessions' I never heard until the mid 1990's, when I picked it up very cheaply and braved a listen - only to discover that one of PW's absolute best songs is the opening track ('It's A Deep Sea'). The Orange Album (which I never bought at the time) is a great record when trimmed down a bit ('Fairy Tales', 'Heavens Above' etc.) Strangely, in later years, I came to love the track, that bass is so redolent of the 80's. I remember 'It Didn't Matter' coming out and that being the final straw for a lot of us (I was 21 at the time). Like a lot of us I felt they seriously began to go off the boil even by 'Our Favourite Shop' - Weller appeared to be getting bored. Just don't forget, there are TSC fans out there just as passionate about "our" band as those Jam die-hards.įascinating to read the stuff about the later Style Council stuff. Even the "ridiculous all-orange sleeve and pressed on two 45 RPM" was damn cool to us. Looking back, yeah, dated sound, comparisons to The Jam and all those other so called negatives, but we TSC people, in general, embraced it all. I recall when I first heard "Promised Land" and "Can You Still Love Me" and being again intrigued and as it was indeed so different from the previous LP. Had "Modernism" got a proper release, I'm sure I would have gone along with yet another style shift.

Paul's music in TSC embraced and introduced me to many different musical styles. So, those last two TSC albums were natural progressions to my ears.

In my case, I was introduced to TSC in late 85/early 86 and didn't even know of The Jam until Paul's solo years. But what I don't particularly like about pieces like this is they fail to recognize that there were, and probably still are, Style Council only fans.
